Relation to gender equality targets
Increasing the visibility of women and their achievements at the University of Vienna is one of the goals of the University of Vienna’s gender equality policy. This includes amongst other things temporary and permanent art initiatives in public spaces. The lack of female scholars among the honorary busts of the Arkadenhof (arcaded courtyard) at the University of Vienna has been a major – albeit not exclusive – focal point since the beginning of the 21st century.
The objective(s) of the tool
The exhibition “Women Life/Live Academia” (FrauenLebenWissenschaft) pursues two objectives: Firstly, to mark the 110th anniversary of the admission of women to study at the University of Vienna. Secondly, the exhibition aims to contribute to the visibility of women and their achievements at the different stages of academic careers.
Description of the tool
The Equality and Diversity unit conceived and organized the exhibition; temporary project employees were hired for its realization. The touring exhibition was designed in the form of 20 movable panels, each two metres in height. In terms of content, it offers a combination of figures, data and facts containing interviews with women in different phases of their academic careers.
In order to increase publicity, a special event was organized to mark the opening of the exhibition. Before the exhibition was subsequently shown throughout several different spots of the University of Vienna, the Arkadenhof was chosen as first location for serval weeks.
The touring exhibition was developed as a temporary project. In order to make its content available permanently, a print leaflet was published and a virtual exhibition was produced for the web.
How the tool works, practical experience
The opening of the exhibition was a grand ceremony with numerous guests, including the then Rector and Vice-Rectors of the University of Vienna. The leaflet was in great demand; due to high interest the touring exhibition was extended beyond its initially intended duration.
