Description of the tool
Automated garage doors opening for deep voices while remaining immovable for higher ones, medication that is less effective for women than for men, smartphone apps only recognizing heterosexual desire – the list of examples of inadequate innovations goes on and on. The common denominator: their lack of gender-sensitive research approaches.
Being aware of the gender specific aspects of their work has become increasingly important for researches over the past years. Where necessary, both the European Commission as well as numerous national research promotion bodies require the inclusion of gender specific dimensions into research.
The exhibition “The Gender Dimensions in Research and Innovation” was created as part of the EU project “Gender Equality in Engineering through Communication and Commitment” (http://www.geecco-project.eu). Employing the examples of energy transition, robotics, medicine, and consumer goods, the exhibition shows how research and innovation are affected by including or neglecting aspects of gender.
